Bettina K. Roberts / Staff Attorney
Bettina re-joined NSB as a staff attorney in 2018, after having also spent six months with the firm in 2015. Previously, Bettina served in the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of North Carolina, where in addition to her trial and appellate caseload, she helped a national committee draft the petitioner’s briefing on a modified categorical approach issue in Descamps v. U.S., 133 S. Ct. 2276 (2013), which resulted in an 8-1 victory in the Supreme Court. She is also a former member of the Fourth Circuit CJA Panel and spent over a year as an associate at a white-collar defense firm in New York. She has experience with all phases of both civil and criminal litigation, has authored briefs and other filings on a wide variety of legal questions, and has successfully argued cases in both federal district and appellate courts.
While in law school, Bettina interned at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia and the California Appellate Project in San Francisco, as well as helped organize a training seminar for over 100 criminal defense lawyers in New Delhi, India, while interning with Switzerland-based non-profit International Bridges to Justice. She also was a member of the Duke Law Wrongful Convictions clinic and a leader in the school’s public interest law community.
