Avinash Samarth / Cochran Fellow

Avinash joined NSB as a Cochran Fellow in 2019. He was formerly a public defender at The Bronx Defenders, where he defended nearly 1,000 people accused of misdemeanors and felonies from criminal and collateral penalties. As a public defender, Avinash won bail hearings, motions to dismiss, suppression hearings, bench trials, jury trials, and a case before the New York Appellate Term. At Yale Law School, he was a student co-director of the Criminal Justice Clinic, where he litigated criminal cases, winning dismissals in all. He also wrote three federal clemency petitions, winning immediate release for one person serving 22 years and two people serving life-without-parole. Avinash also participated in the Media Freedom & Information Access Clinic and Educational Opportunity and Juvenile Justice Clinic. Before law school, he was a paralegal at the ACLU’s National Security Project.
